A stunning work of imaginative fiction, Last Hummingbird West of Chile spins a tale of adventure that is in turn comedic, violent, poignant and thoughtful. Through the exploits of a young sailor born in questionable circumstance and a pair of murderous servants, as well as an assortment of other 19th century regulars, the vital subjects of today—race, religion, sexuality, environment—are framed in history and human culture.

Through narration by human protagonists, a tree, a hummingbird, various beasts, and the landscape itself, Ruddock tells a story of colonialism and environment, brutality and privilege, and the best and worst of human nature.

I mean, come on...

The Last Hummingbird West of Chile???

I read this book for one reason... obligation! I had just joined a book club, and it was the first book selected for the year. I absolutely would never have chosen it on my own and now, I have to admit that it's one of the best books I've ever read. In part, because it's unlike anything I've ever read! It's got it all: romance, passion, suspense, murder... Have you ever delayed something because you didn't want it to end?

Never again will I judge a book by it's title!!!

Nicholas Ruddock found an imaginative and captivating way to bring the reader through an adventure of travel and cultures. I was engaged and entertained while remaining amazed at how we are led along through the story told from vantage points not typically experienced. Without ruining Ruddock's strategy, I compel you to sail oceans, fall in love, meet the characters.

You will be glad you picked this book up.
