Many start reading the Bible at Genesis 1. After all, that's the beginning of all beginnings, when heaven and earth are made.
But Genesis 1 wasn't written in the beginning when heaven and earth were made. It was written later. And it was written by a person called "Moses," who led Israel out of Egypt.
When Genesis 1 was written, Israel had already departed Egypt, crossed the Red Sea, and received the Law from their King, God Himself, at Mt Sinai. While they wandered in the wildenrness for 40 years, Moses penned Genesis 1-11 and the rest of the first five books of the Bible (Torah: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy).
