People will ask, "How do you know so much about the Bible??"
You can decide if you want to tell them.
But my favorite reply is "The story of the Bible is thrilling to me."
Let's face it: We wish we knew the Bible better. We want to know God the way He wants to be known. \What should we expect of him? What does he expect of us? But to learn feels overwhelming. What do we read? Who do we trust? It's easier to just say "Well, I have faith... I don't need ot understand more." But deep down we are hiding and do want to understand more!
We hear the stories of Genesis in bits and pieces from sermons, like a scrap book, but we don't know how all the pieces fit together into a beautiful story that even kids can understand.
The best way to understand the Bible is to enjoy the Bible! Many studies put a microscope on the Bible so small that it grows dry and methodical, like looking at pictures of bicycles instead of riding them.
I teach the Bible as a story to my boys in my living room. ENJOYING the Story is always first. Almost every day we read and walk through the story and bring it to life.
So many of these stories bring tears as I tell them. The first "David vs Goliath" story, a thousand years before David. The hesitation of Jacob to be faithful to God even after God shows him where heaven and earth touch. The irony of a slave made into a vice-president to save a family from famine. This beautiful and faithful God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob working always behind the scenes, showing glimpses just enough to lead these roughneck people into his Promises.
GENESIS is the first book in the Bible and essential to understanding everything else in the Bible. Yes, even Jesus is better understood here. I guarantee you that you will no longer be confused about God's promises and plan after you listen to this.
Note: This does not include Genesis 1-11--the stories that come before Abraham. This is on purpose as we get to know this God and his people. Genesis was written 500 years after the Abraham story through the pen of Moses. In our family, we get to know Moses first before jumping back to Genesis 1-11. This helps the Creation, Flood, and Babel stories make a little more sense.
There's no rush to understand the Bible. The important thing is that we are learning it and understanding this God who is our Guardian and Gardener throughout our lives.
