In Charles Perrault's rendition of Sleeping Beauty, a royal couple's heartfelt wish for a child is finally granted with the birth of a princess. To celebrate, they invite all the fairies to her christening, bestowing upon the princess gifts of beauty, wit, grace, musical talent, and dance. However, an overlooked old fairy curses the princess to death by a spindle prick, which a younger fairy softens to a century-long sleep. Despite the king's efforts to prevent this, the princess eventually pricks her finger and falls asleep, leading to the entire castle succumbing to a slumber spell. A century later, a prince finds and awakens her.
