"There was such a world..." - The world of Polish landowners in East Prussia, cut off from Poland by a cordon in 1920. The world of manors and mansions that were the mainstay of Polishness, noble families for the Country, working among many intricate Polish-German relations.
Such was the land of Halina Donimirska-Szyrmerowa's childhood, who recalls in her memories images of those times and places. Following that, the story continues in the years of the Nazi occupation, when the Polish land was subjected to planned destruction, the hopeful days of the Warsaw Uprising, the Soviet liberation and finally the post-war times of returning to her homelands.
History came full circle and after the war the author returned to the former East Prussia - to Warmia, where she started life anew with her surviving countrymen. And although the gray era of the People's Republic of Poland soon came, her life upheld family traditions. Together with others, she became involved in rebuilding the recovered lands for whose freedom and Polishness her ancestors had fought.
