The Tao Te Ching, written in 500 BC, did not teach the religious doctrine of the "depravity of man," or "free will," meaning you can be other that who and what you are. If that teaching is not true, judgement goes out the window. Instead it said you are an expression of the larger nature of the universe, the Tao.
Your job is to understand and flow with the Tao, find your part in the great story that is unfolding, and direct your uniqueness in the best possible way. Live with a natural, intelligent spontaneity, without oppressive dogma, blame or shame.
