WHY ARE WE HERE?
Gordon Dabbs, PhD
Psalm 8
Genesis 1.1 (ESV) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The universe is not self-explanatory.
Acts 17.24–25 (ESV) The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth . . . gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
The universe is remarkably ordered.
Psalm 19.1 (ESV) The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
You are more than matter.
Genesis 1.26–27 (ESV) Then God said, 'Let us make man in our image, after our likeness' . . . So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
James 3.9 (ESV) With it [our mouth] we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God.
You were made for a purpose.
Genesis 1.28 (ESV) And God blessed them. And God said to them, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion. . .’
Psalm 8.3–5 (ESV) When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him . . . ? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor.
Acts 17.27–28 (ESV) . . . He is actually not far from each one of us, for 'In him we live and move and have our being.’
